Texas AHJ Lookup
Find your Authority Having Jurisdiction — the entity actually enforcing fire code on your building.
What this is
A directory of Texas Authorities Having Jurisdiction — the local fire marshals who actually enforce code on your building. Below is our quick-reference table for the DFW Metroplex (the 12 cities Zion services most), with the IFC/IBC edition each currently enforces, fire marshal contact info, and a link to each city's permit / inspection portal.
Statewide AHJ lookup powers our BDA Division's Building Signal Check tool — 91+ Texas jurisdictions in the database. For a jurisdiction not listed in the DFW quick-reference below, email info@zion.us with your building address.
DFW Metroplex — AHJ quick reference
The 12 DFW cities Zion services most. Code editions and contact info as of May 2026 — verify with the AHJ directly before relying on adoption dates for plan submittal.
Source: city websites, municipal code libraries, fire marshal directories. Last verified May 2026. Adoptions change — verify with the AHJ before relying on this table for design or permit submittal.
How AHJ code adoption works
Every Texas city or county that has adopted a fire code does so by ordinance — they reference a specific edition of the International Fire Code (IFC) and the International Building Code (IBC) and amend specific sections via local amendments. The edition adopted is the one your project must comply with, not necessarily the newest published edition.
Example: as of May 2026, McKinney has adopted the 2024 IFC (effective October 1, 2025), while Dallas is still on the 2021 IFC. A sprinkler design that passes McKinney plan review under 2024 IFC may need adjustment to pass Dallas review under 2021 IFC — the codes are not identical edition-to-edition.
For Texas-administered occupancies (state-owned, certain healthcare, certain regulated industries), the Texas State Fire Marshal's Office (SFMO) enforces under NFPA 1-2021 and NFPA 101-2021 per 28 TAC Chapter 34.
